A Poem For My Dad by Abby Andrews
It comes and it goes
It's everywhere even where nobody goes
It keeps you awake during the night
It's from a tiny tick and one tiny bite ...
It causes immense struggle and pain
I'm not only talking physical, but also mental strain
It hurts people young and old
It takes away freedom and dreams from even the popular and bold
It's hard to erase
It takes up plenty of time and space
It hurts in your fingers it hurts in your toes
It hurts you in your heart and where nobody knows
It is as blind as they come
It's terrible and stupid and angry and dumb
It causes family's pain too
Not only the patient, if only you knew
It's selfish and deceiving
It keeps you hoping and believing
It doesn't get along with doctors in this area
It's compared to fatigue and types of malaria
It's commonly mistaken for something else
It's hard to be positive when you’re in it by yourself
So why is it that so many suffer
What happened to caring and loving your brother
It's taking away rights of people who deserve more
It's running people down and closing the door
It's name is Lyme, and it is far from fine
It hangs around longer than it should,
If I could make a magic cure I would.
What's wrong with our country and its pathetic excuse?
There not trying hard enough they need to put their brain to use
Because ours doesn't work well
Along with a lot of other things, can't you tell?
It's worse than AIDS and others combined
Isn’t that clear enough? Isn't that a sign?
There's thousands of people reaching for a helping hand
We need to be there to pick them up from where they land
It comes and it goes
It's everywhere even where nobody goes
It keeps you awake during the night
It's from a tiny tick and one tiny bite ...
It causes immense struggle and pain
